Foundation presents $120,000 in gifts
from
"9/11 Day
of Giving"
proceeds
CENTENNIAL,
CO
JoAnn B.
Ficke Cancer Foundation President Dan
Ficke recently presented gifts totaling
$120,000
to four Denver metro area organizations
fighting cancer thanks mainly to
proceeds from
"Big Bill's
NY Pizza 9/11 Day of Giving"
fundraiser: the Cancer League of
Colorado, the Colorado Ovarian Cancer
Alliance, the Rocky Mountain Bone Marrow
Transplant Patient Assistance Fund and
Rocky Mountain Cancer Assistance.
Dan Ficke,
Assistant Coordinator of Basketball
Operation 's
at Wake Forrest University, and his
father Big Bill Ficke, owner of Big Bill's
NY Pizza, founded The JoAnn B. Ficke
Cancer Foundation in 2009 in honor of
their mother and wife who passed away
from cancer in 2007. The Foundation's
goal is to assist families who are
fighting cancer and to help fund cancer
research.
"This
is a great day for our Foundation as we
actually put money in the hands of
people who are making a difference every
day to families struggling with cancer,"
Dan Ficke said. "Because
of my mom JoAnn, we know first hand
about the great work these organizations
do, and each one is making a huge
positive impact. We are extremely proud
to support them."
A breakdown of
the JoAnn B. Ficke Cancer Foundation 's
support:
-
$50,000 to the
Rocky Mountain Bone Marrow
Transplant Patient Assistance
Fund that helps patients
undergoing cancer treatment and
their families.
-
$30,000 to the
Cancer League of Colorado to
help local researchers working
on lymphoma research.
-
$30,000 to Rocky
Mountain Cancer Assistance,
which helps patients undergoing
cancer treatment and their
families.
-
$10,000 to
Colorado Ovarian Cancer Alliance
to help raise awareness and
patient assistance.
The
"9/11
Day of Giving"
fundraiser responsible for raising all
the proceeds for the JoAnn B. Ficke
Cancer Foundation is an annual tradition
at Centennial's
Big Bill's NY
Pizza. Rather than paying their meal
checks, guests are simply asked to make
a donation in exchange for their food
and drinks. The first "9/11
Day of Giving" at
Big Bill's
NY Pizza was the brainchild of owner Big
Bill Ficke and was held shortly after
the attacks September 11, 2001 attacks,
with the money going to help families of
New York firefighters. The event created
such a positive feel, Ficke decided to
make it an annual event.
