President’s Message
CONGRATULATIONS to the
members of Cancer League of Colorado, Inc! This organization
is 100 percent volunteers and we operate on our membership dues. CLC
is proud of each member for their hard work and donations to this
cause. We are a unique group of volunteers working to find a cure
for cancer. Just imagine our world without cancer. This is our
ultimate goal.
Author Sue Miller spoke at our membership luncheon last Fall. She
spoke of cancer pointing her life in a different direction. In her
book, I'm Tougher Than I Look, she uses some insight from
Rabbi Ed Feinstein, a two-time survivor of cancer, to guide her
thoughts. These thoughts touched me, and I would like to share them.
"No one asks for cancer. No one deserves it. But once it has found
its way into our lives, it can become a powerful teacher. Cancer can
teach us to take seriously the purposes for which we live. Cancer
can teach us to embrace and celebrate the moments that matter -
moments of closeness, of insight, of meaning. We who have survived
cancer have much to teach."
As members of Cancer League of Colorado, we share the same goal.
Since 1969, we have become a strong unit raising money to fund
cancer research and service grants to change the lives of people who
research and serve cancer patients in Colorado. Is it "just my
imagination" to believe that together we can rid the world of this
deadly disease? I am proud to be a member of this organization.
Thank you for the honor and privilege of working with you to realize
our goal, ending a cure. Together, we can make this happen!
Recent events
The year 2007-2008 is off to a great start. Cancer League of
Colorado Inc. has a new logo. We are hoping to brand our
organization for the future with this logo, which symbolizes hope in
finding a cure in our beautiful state of Colorado.
In August, we held our golf tournament at The Ridge at Castle Pines
North. What started out to be a beautiful day soon became stormy
after nine holes, and we had to call the tournament. We hope that
each player has taken advantage of their nine-hole rain check from
The Ridge. We had our dinner and auction, raising in excess of
$60,000. Despite the weather, people had warm, caring hearts for
CLC. Thank you to our golf committee and corporate board, with fine
leadership from John Snow, Laura Fiemann, Gary Reece and Jim
Hackstaff. We appreciate all the hours of planning and execution for
a successful event.
Race for Research is the last Sunday in August each year. CLC and
the Michelle Plachy-Rubin Foundation have joined forces for this
very special event. Judy Dennis and Marsha Lunnon ran this event
again this year, and we thank you for your time and dedication.
Washington Park was a gorgeous setting to see over 800
runners/walkers come together to support this race on a beautiful
sunny Sunday morning. This event raised about $45,000 to support
brain cancer research. The CLC Membership Luncheon was held on
Thursday, Sept. 20 at The Wellshire Inn. Jane Hampe did an excellent
job working with Leo Goto to plan a wonderful gathering of CLC
members. A big thanks to each of you for making our day together go
smoothly. Jo Blum, former executive director of Families First, was
our speaker. Jo has been living with cancer since February 2003. She
is a dear friend of mine and a new member of CLC. She shared her
journey and hope in finding a cure with us. We would like to thank
Jo for the honesty and insight she shared. Speaking of membership,
please remember dues cover our operating expenses, mail your checks
in ASAP. Thank you.
Our first General Meeting was held Thursday, Oct. 18 at the home of
Edie Marks. It was a "Getting to Know You, Getting to Know Us"
meeting. Thank you for attending and to Edie for hosting. Our High
Tea will be on Sunday, Nov. 18 at the Brown Palace. Jane Mayberry,
Gayle Rogers and their Tea Committee are working to provide a day of
"Holiday Magic."
The Spring Benefit is May 10, 2008, now known as
The Hope Ball. It will be held at
the Hyatt Regency Tech Center. "Just My Imagination" is our
theme this year. Please mark your calendars and save the date.
We also need volunteers to help. Contact our Benefit Chairs Linda
Goto, Marsha Lunnon and Kaye Music for information.
As I close this letter to CLC members, I would like to keep with the
"Imagination" theme for 2007-2008. I imagine working very hard this
year to help provide funds for research and service grants. I
imagine finding a cure for cancer, and a world without cancer.
Please help us with this effort. Remember that the funds we raise
allow researchers to do the initial testing required to qualify for
major grants from the National Institute of Health and other large
grantors. This means that each dollar we donate to cancer research
generates about 20 times that in additional funding.
Thank you in advance for the time and effort each member of Cancer
League of Colorado will donate to this organization.
See you soon!

or she has on others.
Challenge: Together, CLC can make an impact!
