MISSION & HISTORY.
Our mission is to secure the cure or control of cancer by raising funds to support innovative cancer research and cancer-related services in the state of Colorado.
Cancer League of Colorado, Inc. was founded in 1969 by five women whose families were affected by cancer. Their individual heartache sparked a shared mission to raise money for research and patient care. Today, we are at the forefront of discovery into the causes of many types of cancer – and the most effective therapies – primarily through our partnership with the University of Colorado Cancer Center.

TESTIMONIALS.

Many friends and family members have succumbed to this dread disease over my lifetime. Volunteering to raise funds for seed research and service organization grants provides me with meaningful action aimed at lessening the loss others might experience.

What began as an adventure into the volunteer world, has become a true passion for me. Seeing the fruit of our labors and the positive difference our work generates is life altering. Not everyone has the good fortune to devote as many hours to this work as others but every effort moves us closer to our shared goal.
I feel fortunate to be associated with so many other dedicated and caring volunteers, researchers and service providers.

Twenty two years ago, while trying to find a place to put my grief over the loss of my best friend to breast cancer at 41, another close friend and Cancer League president, Fleta Johnsen, told me about Cancer League. 100% volunteer, no paid staff, no overhead, 100% of every dollar raised goes to services and research. I joined!

Cancer League has become part of me. Over the years since I joined, I have become ever more committed to end cancer! I am a Past President, the most rewarding and difficult job that I have ever loved. My sister got breast cancer 7 years ago and I referred her to one of the doctors who was on our SAB for a 2nd opinion. She took her advice for treatment and is still cancer free after 7 years!
Patricia (Pat) Lau
My mother died of cancer at age 30. I was 3 years old, I was an only child, and it would be many years before I would truly be able to understand how profoundly the loss would affect my life, and the lives of my children who would never know their grandmother.

...in 1968, I met 4 women, all of whom had been personally affected by the loss of a loved one to cancer. "Let's do something" became our motto... We five became the founders, we reached out to friends, the membership began to grow and our fundraising efforts took shape. Fast forward 55 years, and my heart is filled with pride and amazement at the growth of the Cancer League and the incredible amount of funds that have been contributed to the fight against cancer.
Michael Ann Hanzel
The loss of 2 parents of close family friends inspired me to step forward to do what I could do to further the cause.
The involvement with Cancer League of Colorado brought forth the understanding of what a small group of women dating back to the organization’s original formation can spearhead the creation of a powerful group that has developed through the years.
As president of the organization in 1995, I have to say the loyalty, generosity and willingness of our members to step forward to enhance our cause was inspirational. Large financial contributions by friends were indeed memorable.
Marsha (Richardson) Lunnon
I was 44 and just had gone through treatment for breast cancer and knew I wanted to be involved in helping others . I saw an article in The Villager about CLC and went to a meeting, not knowing a single person! I signed up to help with the silent auction for the Gala in the Spring, and the rest is history!
For 20 years, Cancer League of Colorado was like an extended family to me. There are so many people who give so much of their time, talent and money to CLC. With no paid staff or offices and all monies going to help the fight against cancer. If someone wants to help, this is a great organization. I am proud to have served in many capacities.
My involvement in CLC gave me the opportunity to meet so many wonderful, kind, caring people. The different volunteer opportunities were endless, and I always felt the support of the entire organization. Most everyone had the same goal….to help fund the research to find the next best treatment for all types of cancer. The funding of Service Grants was an area of particular interest to me, having had cancer.
